Project Background

The Metropolitan Police Service’s redevelopment programme looked to update the existing training facilities at the Hendon Estate Peel Centre, home to their training and operational facilities.

The project ensured that all new build projects provide multi-functional use and flexibility to meet the MPS and MOPC corporate approach to the use of facilities.

The works comprised of two new buildings:

Building A – the largest, provides specialist teaching and training spaces within a rectangular footprint of 87 metres by 63 metres over four floors. The main structure is a reinforced concrete frame and incorporates three glazed roof atria breakout areas and a steel link bridge.

Building B – which stands to the west of Building A, and houses the MPS Firing Range with associated space. The structure includes a portal frame of 18.5 metres by 63.7 metres to the roof level.

Supply and Fabrication

Appointed by main contractor Mace, our scope of supply included:

Building A: approximately 20 tonnes of prefabricated box member columns to the South and West glazed elevation supporting the Podium slab (FJB needed to take into account both engineering and architectural appearances when splicing this highly visible steelwork); cantilever stubs to glazed stair walls for cladding; supply of fabricated plate details for casting in (by others) to reinforced concrete walls; fabricated steel bridge spanning over the entrance atrium (approximately 3 metres wide by 10.5 metres long, preassembled offsite and installed in one piece); fabricated columns, roof beams, cold rolled purlins to the roof level.

Building B: a fabricated portal frame to the Firing Range including tie beams and horizontal brickwork restraint rails; secondary support steel to vehicle entry doors; plant screen to plant areas; perimeter parapet; cantilever roof supports to roof canopy.

Our in-house engineering and procurement co-ordinated the application of three offsite surface treatment specifications across the project:  primer only, hot dip galvanising to 140 microns nominal thickness, and intumescent fire protection to 30 and 60 minutes.

Site Installation

Our site management installed the steelwork to the two structures utilising a range of crane sizes to complete the works (from 45t up to 220t All Terrain).

Our installation included an early visit for the installation of perimeter columns, paint touch up, and post drilling to the concrete frame, and site welded fin plates onto fixing plates cast into slab edges, which required our site co-ordination with the super-structure contractor installing the concrete roof over the firing range.
