Project Summary

Manchester Airport is the third busiest airport in the UK. It is currently undergoing a £1 billion transformation investment to double the size of Terminal 2. The airport will be able to handle 35 million passengers following completion in 2024.

The Transformation Project (MAN-TP) PP40) briefly comprises a two-level mezzanine to accommodate a new baggage handling system.

Our initial scope was to deliver Phase 1, including all structural steelwork and metalwork ancillaries to form:

West Hall Access Platforms: approximately 12 x crossovers and underslung platforms.

East Extension Baggage Hall Mezzanine: the new mezzanine will form an additional 6,200 square metres within the new baggage hall extension. The Phase 1/Early Works package comprised a new Level 10/15 mezzanine between gridlines 41 to 38, to support and provide access to two new baggage sorters and outbound make up carousels.

Supply and Fabrication

We supplied and fabricated all structural steelwork to form the new crossovers and platforms, and Phase 1 bays of the East Baggage Hall mezzanine.

Our in-house management coordinated the surface treatments along with the supply of all metalwork ancillaries, including open grid flooring, Safe Deck, steel stairs, and fixed handrails.

Site Installation

The package works were split between landside and airside working environments.

For airside work, deliveries were all managed and coordinated by our team in-house. This required strict adherence to a documented logistics plan and for all deliveries to be booked in advance. All security measures were strictly adhered to by our site and logistics teams.

All of our operatives held full airside passes to complete works as required.
