Project Background

The rebuild project involved the build of new aviation fuel storage facilities on the original British Pipeline Agency (BPA) operated Buncefield Oil Storage Depot/Terminal. The result of the works would bring aviation fuel from two pipelines into the onsite storage tanks, from which fuel would be pumped through the pipeline system to storage at Heathrow Airport.

The rebuild project necessitated small access structures for new storage tanks and interface tanks situated within new concrete bund walls. The site is split across two areas:

  • Main Site: Our scope of supply included various pedestrian crossings, piperacking, access platforms and walkways, and various tankside valves and manway access platforms.
  • Cherry Tree Farm (CTF): Our scope of supply included four bund wall pedestrian crossings, piperacking, twelve walkways and stairs, and Tank 7 tankside valves and manway access platforms.

Supply and Fabrication

We fabricated all of the structural steelwork for the required access structures and piperacking in our Teesside fabrication workshop, to fulfill the scope for supply only.

At the time of tendering, the Buncefield site was immediately ready to accept the CTF pedestrian walkway and CTF pipe racking, thus utilising our efficient lead time with prioritisation to supply a 27 metre long section of the 67 metre CTF main pipe track walkway, before commencing with the remaining works.

Due to the supply only scope of the contract, We supplied lifting brackets for use by the site installation contractor.

Generally constructed from Parallel Flange Channels (PFCs),we fabricated all of the steelwork piece small before our in-house management co-ordinated delivery to sublet galvanisers and finally to site.

We supplied and installed all ancillaries, including approximately 470 square metres of 30mm deep open grid flooring, 1,300 linear metres of solid stanchions and pre-galvanised handrail, and more than five hundred stair treads. We further supplied galvanised tie rod bracings manufactured by others.
