Project Background

Bradford Teaching Hospital is a large hospital in West Yorkshire operated by Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHNHSFT).

The works comprised a stage of the BTHNHSFT Capital Development plan with construction of a new Ward Block 2 (Wards 31 & 32) and modifications to the existing Ward Block 1 roof and Critical Care Unit (CCU). Roof areas to both ward blocks were dedicated to the housing of services plant.

Ward Block 2, designed by Bowman Riley Healthcare, is a new three-storey structure (with an approximate footprint of 65 metres by 34 metres) linked to the existing adjacent ward, and is required to house Ward 30, Paediatric ward, basement plant space, ground floor entrance, reception, concourse, and rooftop plant room.

Bridger Carr Architects provided the design for Ward Block 1, which was re-roofed and overclad with the existing undercroft space to be fitted out as a CCU.

We supplied and installed the structural steelwork to both ward blocks, along with the supply and install of cold rolled steelwork, metal decking, precast concrete stairs. The cladding to WB2 and overcladding to WB1 were supplied and installed by others.

Supply and Fabrication

We coordinated the detail design, supply, and fabrication of approximately 2,000 pieces of structural steelwork, including 65 tonnes of prefabricated cellular beams.

The feature plenum wall to WB2 was of particular architectural importance; the glazing support steelwork (approximately 40 tonnes) required our in-house Quality Assurance’s careful attention to fabrication and surface treatment. The structure was formed of a high standard using hot dip galvanised Square Hollow Section hollow section columns and beams with Circular Hollow Section cross bracings, mitered joints, and moment connections.

We further supplied and installed approximately 4,850 square metres of Kingspan MD80 metal decking to form the First, Second, and Roof Levels to Ward Block 2 throughout the phased installation.

Site Installation

The site was located at the centre of a major teaching hospital, bounded by an existing hospital street and main entrance, catering block, Wards 29 & 30, all of which remained in use throughout the contract duration.

The over-roofing of an existing ward block (Wards 29 and 30, elderly wards) remained in use through the duration, requiring careful timing and close liaison with ward staff.

The site restrictions required significant work in small areas and restricted spaces. We installed new steel between two live hospital wings, drawing on our wealth of site management and logistics experience to plan the sequencing of delivery loads.

Our site works further required careful lifting of materials over the populated hospital wings and propping of the live wing with temporary props to facilitate the removal of support columns.
